Oranges are not the only fruit

Still-life is probably the largest genre when it comes to paintings so I thought that would choose a selection featuring wonderful summer fruit to in the hope of summer days to come.

Strawberries by Manet 1880

I love the simplicity and freshness of this painting, the simple white background makes the strawberries look even more luscious.

Still-life with peaches Renoir 1881

The loosely drawn background contrasts with the sharply defined peaches that almost appear to almost tumble out of the dish before us.

Still-life with watermelon Sarah Miriam

Sarah Miriam was one of the first professional female artists in the United States. Active in Baltimore and Philadelphia during the 1820s, she gained fame for her portraits and still life’s. The soft flesh of the melons is beautifully captured against the almost forensic detail of the seeds.

Still-life with apples Paul Cezanne 1893

Not strictly a summer fruit but one of my favourite still-life’s. The fruit and the fabrics just swirl around each other creating beautiful organic forms.
