This is a recent scheme of work I did with my Year 4 class (8-9 year olds) on Japanese art including a trip to the V & A. As part of this scheme they studied the work of Hokusai. They began by making line drawings of both The Great Wave and one of the views of Mount Fuji. They were then allowed to choose which they preferred to complete in watercolour and pen and ink. My top tips would be always show a line drawing as they will understand the makeup of the composition with greater understanding. My other advice would be to always prepare an example yourself as you will understand the problems they might encounter. They really responded to these paintings but I think this was helped by the fact that they had been to the V & A first.
