The heralds of Spring!

I very much welcome Mothering Sunday as with its arrival signs of spring are evident everywhere and let’s face it those signs have never been more welcome after the glacial blasts of last February. There is indeed nothing like the Northern European spring and it has been much celebrated in all the arts but here are just a few of my favourite spring themed paintings.

book of hours

Court life has never looked so elegant in the Book of Hours as depicted by the Limbourg Brothers for the Duc of Berry. The colours still sparkle even after so many centuries. This is the month of April and the freshness of the greens really capture the newly awakened landscape of Spring.

botticelli

Botticelli’s Primavera impossibly beautiful, my favourite parts of this painting is the wonderful light through the trees and the carpet like effect of the flowers.

Spring means time for more outdoor pursuits and here we have Van Gogh’s Fishing in the Spring. A simple composition unified by the sparkling colour palette of blues, yellows and greens.

Spring time means cherry blossom and the master of painting such a subject has to be the artist Hokusai.

Finally an offering from one of my young Year 4 students.
