The journey from Lent to Easter

Lent 3

Currently I am working in a small catholic primary school and I was asked by the R.E teacher to come up with a lesson plan reflecting the Lent diary leading up to Easter. The challenge for my Year 5 students was to firstly to enlarge the central image of the cross with the symbolic rising sun behind. Working in colour pencil they were allowed to choose their own colour scheme. After they had finished colouring they then given a sheet with words associated with the Lent period. They choose words that for them held particular resonance. What particularly pleased me was the care they took with their colouring including choosing tonal colours or creating a pattern and the careful consideration in choosing their words. Best of all they have stopped saying “is this good?” and started using their own judgement. What I like to call “taking ownership.”
