Artists paint their own self-portrait for a variety of reasons and at different stages in their life’s. For me the self-portrait that stands above all others is Goya’s ‘Self-portrait at an easel’ 1790, although that date is still in debate.
What is it about this self-portrait that so appeals, it is the way that Goya presents himself with such searing honesty. His flashy outfit that is too tight and he is too old for depicted against the unflattering window light. This is what ‘touches’ the on-looker that even artists as great as Goya are as vulnerable as you or I.
