Life drawing without a model

The tittle may seem a contradiction as you can’t possibly do life drawing without a ‘live’ model. However there are those days when you wake up and have a yearning to practise drawing the human form. Yesterday was such a day so what to do without that essential model? For me the next best thing is use the available resources of the sculptures in the wonderful museums and galleries in London. The obvious places of the V & A and the British Museum were going to be crowded it being a Sunday so I headed off the Wallace Collection. Here amongst the 18th century opulence of the swirling Rococo I found this stunning small bronze of a seated Nymph by Giovanni da Crema late 15th century. A miniature masterpiece I think you will agree.

For my sketch I started with a 2B pencil and then worked in the colour used a water souble chalk pastel.
